My library visit.

Today I visited with a wonderful librarian in the Columbia tech center about my essay topic. I originally had difficulty trying to pick a topic to write my essay on, I knew that because Lindsay kept talking about sleepy hallow that other people would also use sleepy hallow as their essay prompt however the more I watched the show and looked into what the book was all about the more I wanted to write my essay about sleepy hallow. Even the name alone sounds cool and it is not just because it is similar to deathly hallow because I am a huge Harry potter fan. However the reason I even became interested in the show sleepy hallow was- and I’m being completely one hundred percent honest- was to score brownie points in Lindsay’s class however as I started watching the show I fell in love. It was amazing I loved the odd occurrences that happened in the show they were so interesting.

As I walked into the library I honestly was not nervous at all I knew exactly what I wanted to do for my essay all I needed was help on where to find sources. the reason that I knew exactly what I wanted to do was actually because of my blog post about Edgar Huntly two weeks ago, I related everything back to modern day science and it stuck, so that’s how I figured out what I wanted to write about.

I walked into the library and made immediate eye contact with the librarian, it was now or never, no turning back now. I was greeted by a warm smile and a friendly “Hello, how can I help you today?” To which I responded, “Hi I’m from Lindsay’s American lit class and I need some help finding sources for my paper.” She immediately invited me into her spacious office area where it was a lot quieter and asked me about my topic. I told her that I really want to do my paper on the book Sleepy Hallow and relate it back not only to the show but tie it all together with using modern day science to explain the odd occurrences in the book. I explained to the librarian that I grew up with a medical background because my mom is a dentist and my dad is a doctor and I myself plan on going into dental so I know a lot about the field and what I don’t know i can research, which is the point of my secondary sources. The librarian was absolutely intrigued by my twist on my research paper and wanted to help, she was very enthusiastic and I enjoyed that, she was very easy to talk to and down to earth. She showed me how to reserve books in the library and how to look up medical references through Clark college for free online and we actually had the time to look up a few fun medical definitions on some of the sites that she showed me we laughed about how medical definitions and explanations can make my paper go by quick.

Over all my library experience was amazing, the librarian was so funny and kind I definitely will not hesitate to ask her for help. She even asked if by chance I could bring her a copy of my final essay because she was actually really interested in what I had to say, it was very nice to be treated so well and not judged by another person and it just made my experience that much better. She definitely valued my opinion and was not biased about my topic which I appreciated, it really helped my creative thinking flow. I actually am no longer dreading this essay, however I’m not looking forward to it either.

  1. Hey Samantha! You’ll have to fill me in sometime on how the television series is. I haven’t seen it yet! So, are you doing the short story along with the tv show? Keziah, and Jessica are also working on pairing texts with the story, so you guys might share resources (although each of you are taking a different spin on it). Also, will you be looking at both “medically”?
